The Rural News Tool Box is a project of the Rural News Network at The University of Montana.
Here, you'll find tips and tools -- as well as tutorials on how to implement them -- that can be cost-effective ways to enhance the Web presence of a small newspaper; and to use the Web to reach out to a community online.
All but one of these tools is free and none of them require a computer programming degree or a 1,000-page manual to implement.
The Rural News Network was founded in 2006 in an effort to experiment with online journalism and participatory journalism in Montana's rural communities. The first phase of the project centered on helping small communities create local online hubs for news and information while teaching journalism students about the culture, economy and issues of rural America and getting their feet wet with the Web. Since RNN was launched funded first by a New Voices grant from J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism, two community sites have launched, in Dutton and in Crow Agency.
This tool box is derived from research done throughout the process of building the two RNN community sites as well as from interviews with rural editors and publishers and rural community members about their wants and needs. Students also researched best practices from leading news organizations across the country to devise this list.
